I am in the process of working on interiors for John Wick's (7th Sea, Legend of the 5 Rings game designer) House of the Blooded. Which I also had the opportunity to be part of the playtest of the rules and setting. It is a great game.

Playing a game you are to illustrate, makes it a ton of fun. Working with someone like John, is even more fun on top of it. I'm to do 13 illustrations for each of the 13 chapters. Because we did NOT want to show DIRECTLY what the ven look like (the culture that HotB is about), we are doing it as a series of archaeologist sketches and notes. Show indirectly through a cameo and a wall painting, what the ven are... and hopefully, leaving a lot to the imagination of each table that plays the game.

Coming up with the notes is a hoot. Because we can be so academic... and because we are purposively jumping to wrong conclusions.. which you can discover when you play the game.

John has given me permission to post some of my art as I go along on this assignment. So I'm sharing a bit of current passion. I hope it intrigues... and oh yeah, one more note... the runes are an alphabet I made up. The key will be in the book.

Here is John's blog on his game, check it out, its fun and informative:

That's some excellent work. I love the idea of presenting the game as an archaeological study of an ancient culture. It creates a really powerful feeling and mood for the game.

I'm really looking forward to this game's release.
A game setting as an artifact...wow, where does John get inspired for these wonderful ideas? ;)

I can't wait to see the other 11, Storn. That top piece is my favorite of your works ever.
From me in 2001. OH SNAP! BURNED!

I admit defeat.

Jared did everything before us and now all of these games are watered down crud and we should be giving our games away while Jared rides limo's and flies in his private jets on the moneys he makes as a professional game designer while the rest of us labor under the yoke of just another game storefront, IPR.

Re: I admit defeat.

I totally agree! But you guys can still hang out with me... because, you know, gotta stay grounded. ;)

real

I will help you, as they say, "keep it real".

Re: real

Can I be the dwarf in the chariot! I want to drink Cristal and suck blow off of the babes while telling you that you're but a mortal man Jared!

Re: I admit defeat.

Jared told me he thinks Judd is the man and wants to sell out to him.
Actually, if you look at The Book of the Shadowlands (1997)and The Second Book of the Shadowlands (1998) and Way of Shadow (1998), you'll see THREE books written and developed for the Legend of the Five Rings line that were all done as actual tomes in the L5R universe.

So go snap yersself! ROASTED!
Oh, these are lovely. Though I love your colour work, I'm very partial to B&W sketches. :-)
I just wanted to add my two cents and say that this art work is really fabulous.

After John told me about this game and I had played it a few times pictures began forming in my head about who and what the Ven were and this art does nothing but magnify and expand on those ideas in such a beautiful way.

Good Job!
thanks folks.

And yes, anyone with a J is the man. I, unfortunately, am left out of that equation.

"S" comes a close second. "Solas" and "Storn," ya know.
story of my life
Good lord. That is an absolutely brilliant idea. I was wondering how you were going to illustrate this thing without ruining the weird, awesome vagueness of exactly what the Ven were like.

But, you know, I think the house icons don't really fit, visually. Now that you're establishing a look for Ven design and iconography, the bear, wolf, etc. icons kind of stand out as clearly the product of our own culture.
